Weekly Update – 16th July

| Weekly Update

16th July 2023

I am so happy to be back home in West Cork for summer recess. It’s been a whirlwind few months since becoming leader. I can’t wait to catch up with everyone and get out and about in Cork South West.

🏡 The Dáil went into recess for the summer on Thursday. But there is no break for the people living in constant dread and fear due to the Government’s failure on Housing: https://youtu.be/yFP21d3m7E8

🐄 The abuse of bull calves shown on RTÉ Investigates is a direct consequence of decades of failed agricultural policy by FF and FG. I spoke about the need for a new sustainable approach to agriculture with the Taoiseach: https://youtu.be/BFZE-PamRJ0

🏘️ The Taoiseach attempted to pin the blame for the homelessness crisis on homeless people themselves this week. A completely unacceptable and baseless comment: https://youtu.be/IhOLjz8VIjQ

🏘️ There are a record 12,441 people living in homeless emergency accommodation – 3,699 are children. Cian O’Callaghan called the Government out for deleting this fact from a motion: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CumJ_baOgDq/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

🎓 Students across the country are struggling to afford college, with high fees, accommodation costs, and transport costs. I met with USI this week to discuss the need to make third level education accessible and affordable.

🛞 On Tuesday I met with The Wheel about issues facing the community and voluntary sector. There is an urgent need to introduce parity for Section 39 workers to bring their pay and conditions in line with HSE staff.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 I met with St Vincent De Paul and One Parent Family Ireland on Thursday to discuss the issues facing families across Ireland.

🔵 Disabled children are being denied access to waiting lists for overnight respite beds based on their schools patronage. I met with Cork Parents Unite to discuss this unacceptable discrimination and have raised the issue with the Minister.

📻 I spoke on Drivetime about the mistreatment of calves highlighted by RTÉ Investigates https://www.rte.ie/…/22273000-political-outcry-about…/

📻 I spoke on the same issue on the Last Word with Matt Cooper https://link.goloudplayer.com/s/pG2fqCJ9idYi

🎙️ I sat down with Andrea Horan and James Kavanagh for a live Q&A on Thursday. It streamed live on my Instagram and I’ll be releasing it as a podcast soon for anyone who didn’t catch it.

📺 I spoke on Primetime about how the policy of intensive dairy farming lead to bull calves being treated as little more than a waste product, and the steps we need to take to fix our agricultural model.

🎭 I was honoured to launch The Skibbereen Arts Festival this weekend. It’s running from 26th July to August 5th: https://www.skibbereenartsfestival.com/

🌍 Single use plastic is incredibly damaging to our environment. For plastic-free July, Ballydehob Tidy Towns are holding an exhibition about plastic waste in the Old Bank on Main St. Open daily throughout July 3-6pm

⚠️ Residency permits for migrants cost €300. The Government doubled the price during austerity and was never lowered. I asked the Minister to lower these costs: https://www.oireachtas.ie/…/question/2023-07-11/496/…
