Weekly Update – 16th October

| Weekly Update

16th October 2023

I hope everyone got to enjoy some sunshine this weekend ☀️

🤔 The Budget can be confusing. There’s a lot of spin and  messing around with figures to make funding look higher than it truly is. I broke down the reality of this year’s budget here https://www.instagram.com/reel/CyRLl31M0F-/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

🕊️ The blockade of Gaza is a war crime and a humanitarian disaster. There is no excuse for the targeting of civilians by Hamas or Israel. It is essential that the blockade is lifted and peace talks begin immediately https://youtu.be/nIr3CnQ5DPE?si=XlrgT3jbA_tfyUWq

💸 Israel has ordered 1m Palestinians in northern Gaza to move south in advance of a ground offensive. This call must be reversed – the alternative is unimaginable. Donations can be made to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund https://pcrf1.app.neoncrm.com/forms/gaza-relief

📻 I went on Morning Ireland to express my disappointment that #Budget24 didn’t do enough to face the major problems facing Ireland in housing, health, and climate. The Government is out of ideas for the future of Ireland https://x.com/SocDems/status/1712102755802788326?s=20

🔵 €64m of new funding for disability services is insultingly low and does nothing to address the serious issues facing the sector. If this Government didn’t invest in disability at a time where there is a huge financial surplus, I have no faith they ever will. https://www.instagram.com/reel/CyTICfWs5h9/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA=

🌍  Jennifer Whitmore TD called out the Government for its slow movement on climate action in the budget. The €3bn Climate & Nature fund sounds good, but it doesn’t kick in until 2026. Where is the urgency? https://www.instagram.com/reel/CyS_VpyMOLX/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

🏥 Every possible alternative to the temporary closure of the Centre for Mental Health Care and Recovery in Bantry must be considered. I have written to the Minister and the Oireachtas Mental Health Committee asking them to examine the matter urgently.

🔵 A proposal for the future of long-term disability payments is being developed by Government and is now open for public consultation from 20/9 – 15/12 2023. Submissions will be accepted in a written and video format. https://www.gov.ie/…/3b001-green-paper-on-disability…/

🎵 The Bantry Music Centre project will be a dedicated venue for festivals and year-round education and entertainment. West Cork Music wants to hear from you. Complete their survey here www.westcorkmusic.ie/survey

👩‍🎓 I will be giving a keynote address at the #IUAFutureofIreland event, talking about issues facing students and universities. Register here to attend online https://t.co/mvnwZY6EGr
