Weekly Update – 18th December

| Weekly Update

18th December 2023

🚨There is no justification for what happened in Galway yesterday. It is just horrendous. Now more than ever we need to recognise and celebrate the value of our migrant communities: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C1AAgrFMpYj/?igshid=NzBmMjdhZWRiYQ==

📢 3 and half years on from the Repeal referendum, women are still forced overseas to seek medical care. The review of the current legislation was clear – it is failing pregnant people. I asked the Tánaiste to implement the findings of the report without delay: https://youtu.be/JBRL5G6T1-k

🌾 Thousands of farmers will be waiting months for vital ACRES payments due to the Dept being under resourced to administer the scheme. I asked the Minister to provide advance payments to all farmers affected: https://youtu.be/rJAoiDlyE8k

🟡🔵 The Government will be cutting supports to Ukrainian refugees in the new year. I asked the Taoiseach to provide me with the data backing up this decision, but despite promises in the Dáil – nothing has been provided: https://youtu.be/Kv65oNvezDo

🗣️ There are no words to describe the continued slaughter of innocent civilians in Gaza. I again asked the Taoiseach to take a bold stance in the EU and call for the suspension of the EU-Israel trade agreement: https://youtu.be/3GOj1xcRkus

🏡 Cian O’Callaghan, the Social Democrats housing spokesperson, called for a permanent ban on no-fault evictions. This is a standard protection across Europe: https://www.instagram.com/p/C0y0WJ7sOhU/?hl=en

🌍 Jennifer Whitmore, the Social Democrats climate spokesperson called out the Government for wanting to allow their Climate and Nature Fund’s to be able to invest in fossil fuels: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C01pU6YMbFv/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

👩‍👦Marriage does not make a family. The definition of the family in the Constitution is outdated and the referendum to change the definition is welcome: https://youtu.be/-jeMrUlJrdY

🗳️ It is difficult to be as enthusiastic about the referendum on care. Government have refused the recommendations of the Citizens Assembly and have chosen an amendment which is purely symbolic – and will deliver no actual improvements to the lives of women and carers: https://youtu.be/PB-aA5iCMLs

🏆 HUGE congratulations to the O’Donovan Rossa ladies football team who won the All-Ireland Junior Club Championship final this weekend.

🎥 ‘Two For The Road’ a short film filmed on the Beara Peninsula, and directed by Lochlainn McKenna, has been long-listed for an Academy Award. You can watch the full film here: https://youtu.be/icEgMGYtRUg?si=5ZFbx0pWkfyPAnUx

🏘️ I asked the Minister for Integration how many people who had been granted refugee status, remained in Direct Provision centres due to a lack of available accommodation. The answer – 5,960 people: https://www.oireachtas.ie/…/question/2023-12-12/705/…
