Weekly Update – 23rd October

23rd October 2023

Here’s an update on some of our work last week.

WEEKLY UPDATE

🕊️ What is happening in Gaza is not a war, it is an ethnic cleansing. I appealed to the Taoiseach to use his voice at an emergency EU council meeting to advocate for the citizens of Gaza and for peace https://youtu.be/0TrNfaxE7eM

📺 On Monday, I was on Upfront with Katie Hannon to discuss Gaza and Section 39 workers https://www.tiktok.com/@social_democrats/video/7290924862674095393?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7267495785200731681

🏘️ This Government’s approach to Housing has failed an entire generation. It has never been harder for people to own their own home https://youtu.be/gkhT-8JnKNc

🔵 The allocation to disability services in #Budget24 is pitiful. If this Government will not invest in disability services with a €14bn budget, when will it? I have genuinely lost faith they ever will https://youtu.be/1RzK9jLWkys

🏥 Patients across Ireland will pay the price for massive underspend in the health service in Budget 2024. Róisín Shortall TD called out the mindset within government and its departments that ‘public services are just for the poor’. Until that changes we will not be a fully developed modern country https://www.instagram.com/reel/CyoRk4bMEB-/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

🌧️ The damage caused by floods in the wake of Storm Babet has been devastating for communities in Cork, Kerry and Waterford. Government and local authorities need to provide every support available to households and businesses affected. https://www.socialdemocrats.ie/cairns-expresses-support…/

🗳️  Last Wednesday, the Dáil voted on a motion on the crisis in Israel and Gaza. The Government voted down a Social Democrats’ amendment to include an explicit condemnation of Israel’s war crimes in Gaza. The voting record to include our amendment is here: https://www.oireachtas.ie/…/vote/dail/33/2023-10-18/129/

🗣️ We wanted this motion to be a unified statement from Ireland on the situation in Palestine and Israel. However, without the inclusion of an explicit condemnation of Israel’s war crimes in Gaza,  the Social Democrats could not support the Government’s motion. The voting record for this vote is here: https://www.oireachtas.ie/…/vote/dail/33/2023-10-18/131/

📚 I spoke at an event for the Irish University Association on Thursday. Raising the shortfall in core funding, precarious working conditions in the sector, the need to recognise PhD researchers as workers, costs of education and accommodation, and access to college education. https://youtu.be/XVGNqzFq0gI?si=CW9F9gv7VjgHnAm2 (📸 Jason Clarke)

🌍 Climate change has been the elephant in the room in the response to the flooding last week. The devastation experienced by communities is climate change in action https://www.rte.ie/…/1022/1412243-weather-climate-change/

🏘️ College students are often encouraged to avail of digs accommodation. These arrangements are subject to little to no regulation and leave students vulnerable to exploitation. I asked the Minister for Further and Higher Education what he is doing to regulate this sector https://www.oireachtas.ie/…/question/2023-10-19/90/…
