Weekly Update – 30th October

| Weekly Update

30th October 2023

Happy nearly Halloween. The Dáil is in recess this week. Here is a quick update on some of last week’s work.

🗣️ It is unbelievable that world leaders – who claim to champion human rights – are refusing to demand a stop to the consistent murder of innocent civilians in Gaza: https://youtu.be/oXeHwmVOcUU

🌍 The grim reality of climate change is that flooding events are going to increase – and we are completely unprepared for that inevitability. We need a national flood management plan with nature based solutions as well as engineering works to prevent disasters: https://youtu.be/ZAUyXn5QcWg

🔵 Disability rights in Ireland are entirely notional. They are there on paper but not in practice in our communities. No one gets the services they are entitled to without a fight. I called on the Tánaiste to ratify the optional protocol of the UNCRPD immediately, so that disabled people can exercise their rights. https://youtu.be/kbqu2WiGhVQ

💧 Jennifer Whitmore highlighted on RTÉ that Ireland has not been compliant with water quality EU directives for 30 years. Under Uisce Éireann’s current pace it will be another 20 years before we are fully compliant. That’s not nearly good enough https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cy8DhfHM6iW/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

🏘️ 3,904 children are living in emergency accommodation. We are not a country starved of resources. Ensuring no child grows up without a home should be the bare minimum of any government. Cian O’Callaghan has called on the Minister to publish a plan to eradicate child homelessness in 2024 https://www.instagram.com/p/Cy6K8-tMXyw/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

🎃 The Leap Scarecrow Festival is on from the 27th Oct – 5th Nov. A free and family friendly festival with so many great events taking place. Check out the programme here: https://t.co/zXTFyUMwH3

🎣 I asked the Minister for the Marine to ban pair trawling from taking place within a 6 mile limit of the shore – in order to protect inshore waters for small boats and recreational fishers https://www.oireachtas.ie/…/question/2023-10-26/230/…

🌊 Lough Hyne has seen a devastating decline in marine life and water quality over the last number of years. It is absolutely unacceptable that such a vital nature reserve has been allowed to decline under the Government’s watch. I asked the Minister for a dedicated conservation management plan for Lough Hyne: https://www.oireachtas.ie/…/question/2023-10-17/315/…

📚 The increase in PhD stipends awarded through the Science Foundation of Ireland and the Irish Research Council is welcome. But thousands of researchers fall outside of these organisations. I asked the Minister to ensure all PhD researchers would receive fair pay for their work https://www.oireachtas.ie/…/question/2023-10-19/145/…
