Weekly Update – 4th March

| Weekly Update

🌍 Ireland is on track to miss our climate targets, but Government refuses to acknowledge this and change their approach. If we don’t act now, it will devastate the country: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C3-StswMnLN/

🗳️ This Friday, we will vote on the Family and Care Referendums. Please visit https://checktheregister.ie/en-IE/ to ensure you are registered and to find your polling station.

🔵 Many disabled people and carers feel forgotten and abandoned by government – and by the Care referendum. Questions are rightly being asked of political parties’ commitment to disability rights.

The Government must start by ratifying the Optional Protocol of the UNCRPD. https://youtu.be/3wtFNe7rHI4

🙌 Jennifer Whitmore put forward a bill last week to remove the requirement for election candidates to put their address on the ballot paper. It is an invasion of privacy that holds many back from seeking to represent their community https://www.instagram.com/reel/C4BWmqWsmNe/

🎣 I attended a briefing by the National Inshore Fishers Association highlighting the issues small boats face when Government policy favours a small number of big players. Students from Kenmare also highlighted the issues faces in Kenmare and Bantry Bay.

🚏 I met with the Irish Wheelchair Association as they launched their report “Going Nowhere”. A damning review of Ireland’s approach to accessible public transport: https://www.iwa.ie/get-involved/advocacy-campaigns/our-campaigns/getting-nowhere-time-for-true-access/

💜 On Saturday, I met with all of Cork South West’s amazing Soc Dem candidates and the Cork South West branch in advance of the upcoming local elections. Cllr Chris Heinhold for Bantry (Follow Chris on Instagram), Isobel Towse for Skibbereen (Follow Isobel on Instagram), and Ann Bambury for Bandon (Follow Ann on Instagram).

🟡 I asked the Minister for an update on the action plan for survivors of mother and baby institutions: https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/debates/question/2024-02-27/450/

🌱 On Wednesday 6th, applications will close for the Community Climate Action Programme where community organisations can apply for funding for local climate action projects: https://www.corkcoco.ie/en/resident/environment/community-climate-action-programme-ccap
